Becoming a “Five-Star” Doctor
I am Dr. Irena Mehandjiska Shumanska. I am a General Practitioner with experience in the field of family medicine. I care for patients every day and I find it most rewarding when trust starts to develop and patients start opening up and sharing their life stories. As doctors, we owe a duty of care to our patients, which extends far beyond just keeping our patients alive. I feel responsible toward my patients’ overall wellbeing. Below are steps I take to achieve the 5 qualities of a five-star doctor:
1. Care provider
- Taking a genuine interest in the patients’ lives by asking questions and expressing empathy
- Uphold patient confidentiality to build relationships and trust
- Follow-up with patients regularly to monitor their overall health and wellbeing
- Provide personalized services for better outcome
2. Decision maker
- Always have the patients’ best interests at heart
- Ask questions to identify patients’ priorities
- Explain all the options to help patients make educated decisions
3. Communicator
- Explain the importance of a healthy lifestyle
- Ask questions to uncover patient lifestyle modification needs
- Encourage the implementation of self-care strategies
- Frequent follow ups to improve patient adherence
4. Community leader
- Be aware of community happenings and in particular those that affect wellbeing of community
- Be dedicated to serving the community and actively participate and contribute in community events
5. Manager
- Effectively communicate with colleagues as well as clients – ask questions, learn to listen, be aware of and be able to manage own and others emotions
- Be open and honest about the challenges you are facing and have the courage to ask for help
- Be resourceful, leverage your network – Who is the expert in this area? Who has information that may help?
Dr Mehandjiska studied her doctor’s degree at St. Cyril and Methodius University, in Macedonia, graduating 2013. She is experienced in health screenings, and neurological status. She has been dealing with Emergencies and is continuously training First Aid Skills for people. Teaching experience she also has from Medical High School where she has been teaching several subjects. Being worked at and Ophthalmological Department, eye examination is one of her strengths. Before joining the Beijing International Medical Center she worked at Oasis International Hospital Beijing as a Family Medicine Doctor.
